Conversation and the computer: A study of the conversational spin-off generated among learners of english as a foreign language working in groups

Abstract

Three small multilingual groups of learners of English as a foreign language worked on three text-based CALL tasks. As they did so, their conversations were video-recorded in order to investigate the possible spin-off from the activities in terms of interaction in the target language. Although this interaction was found not to be linguistically rich, it pointed up differences between the three programs which provide some insights into the nature of CALL activity. The results are discussed in terms of some current theories of second language acquisition and suggestions are made regarding the value of the programs for language learning
