2019, Journal of Business ResearchCitation Excerpt :To measure the default risk of sample firms, we use Altman Z-score, S&P senior debt rating, and an investment-grade dummy for the rating. The Altman Z-score, which predicts a business failure (Hammer, 1983), is measured as 1.2 ∗ (current assets − current liabilities) + 1.4 ∗ (retained earnings/total assets) + 3.3 ∗ (earnings before interest and taxes/total assets) + 0.6 ∗ (market value of equity/book value of total liabilities) + 1.0 ∗ (sales/total assets). Following previous literature on credit ratings, we designate numbers from 1 for a D rating to 21 for a AAA rating for the S&P senior-debt rating (Rating).

2014, Expert Systems with ApplicationsCitation Excerpt :From 1967 to 1980, multivariate discriminant analysis (MDA) was the dominant technique used (Altman, 1968; Beaver, 1968; Blum, 1974; Deakin, 1976; Edmister, 1972). However, MDA suffers from some limitations such as the linearity, normality and independence among the variables (Barnes, 1982; Hamer, 1983; Karels & Prakash, 1987). Considering that the violation of these assumptions frequently occurs with variables like financial data (Deakin, 1976) which are not linear, normal and, most importantly, are not completely independent of one another (Karels & Prakash, 1987; Martin, 1977), many studies have favored logistic regression (Martin, 1977; Ohlson, 1980) over MDA.
