Segmentation of Glomeruli Within Trichrome Images Using Deep Learning
2019, Kidney International ReportsCitation Excerpt :Although the latter item calls on the expertise of a pathologist, the former can be easily automated. Also, features, such as the location (cellular or compartmental) and distribution (focal or diffuse or segmental or global) of the intraglomerular damage, determine the type of glomerular disease (glomerulonephritis vs. glomerulosclerosis) can be automated.10,20–29 Availability of digitized images provides an immense resource that has opened up opportunities to leverage different tools to improve the analysis of such descriptors that characterize the disease.
Osteopontin as an injury marker expressing in epithelial hyperplasia lesions helpful in prognosis of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
2007, Translational ResearchCitation Excerpt :Although OPN has been a potential biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of some diseases such as crescent nephropathies and myocardial infarction,15–17 it is premature to conclude that OPN is a specific biomarker for FSGS as OPN upregulation is a common phenomenon observed in different types of renal cells under a variety of kidney injuries.13–15 However, OPN might still be a useful sensor for detecting the early EPHL-related injuries of glomeruli in FSGS; additional human studies are required to confirm our result, especially for FSGS caused by suspected environmental toxins.11 Even if some EPHLs in FSGS have histologic features similar to crescents of typical crescentic glomerulonephritis (Fig 2, I–N),2–7 the pathogenic roles of EPHLs in FSGS remain unclear.
