Abstract

The performance of a resistive plate chamber operated with pure Freon 13B1, CF3Br, has been experimentally studied using cosmic rays. The extremely small charge of the signals observed in this operating condition, about 0.2 pC/pulse, improves by orders of magnitude the rate capability of this detector. In addition Freon is a non-flammable gas which allows a completely safe RPC operation.
