Abstract

The supporters of psychogeriatric patients attending 5-day hospitals were asked to complete questionnaires concerning the particular problems they experienced in caring for their patients at home. The information provided by the supporter was then related to measures of mood, self-reported strain, and outcome 12 mth from the patients' first attendance. The results pointed to the importance of problems reflecting attentional and emotional demand from such patients, in determining the level of strain, and the supporters' capacity to continue to care for the patient in the community.

    Citation Excerpt :

For elderly persons who are not under social security, paying their health expenses and meeting their requirements of a decent life it is especially difficult when they are too old to work and this proves a social problem (Cloutier-Fisher and Joseph, 2000; Koşar, 1996). Problems defined above as stresses, affecting elderly people's mental and physical states, (Gilleard et al., 1982) affect movement ability and functional independence and cause new problems (Dirik et al., 2006). Elderly people whose physical problems begin to increase consider these as the reasons behind their depressive state and increases their depressive tendencies (Gottfries et al., 1997).
