Abstract

Cathodic polarization of LaxSryMnO3 (x = 0.3–0.6; y = 0.3–0.5) electrodes, doped by the sintering agents Bi2O3, PbO, Sb2O3, CuO, or Bi2CuO4, on a zirconia solid electrolyte has been studied. The electrochemical activity of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 electrodes with sintering agent Bi2CuO4 was found to be the highest among the solid solutions based on La(Sr)MnO3. The positive effect of the bismuth cuprate addition is ascribed to the sufficiently high mixed ionic and electronic conductivity of Bi2CuO4. The obtained results are characterized by the absence of a direct correlation between the electrochemical parameters of the electrode layers and oxygen permeability of the manganite ceramics. It was found that oxygen transport through the manganite ceramics is limited by the sorption on ceramics surface.

Therefore, the increases of Ea value confirm the appearance of oxygen ionic conduction at high temperatures (above 700 °C). Our observation is in agreement with the reported result in literatures [26–29]. O2-TPD analysis is an effective technology to investigate the temperature dependent oxygen desorption behavior on material surface.

Single-phase SCM powders, dense ceramics and porous electrode layers were prepared via citrate synthesis route with the final annealing temperatures of 1573 K, 1693 K and 1473 K, respectively. The experimental procedures and equipment used for materials processing and characterization, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), controlled-atmosphere dilatometry, 18O/16O isotopic exchange depth profile analysis employing the time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), impedance spectroscopy, and measurements of the current-voltage curves of model SOFCs, were described elsewhere ([6–11] and references cited). The tracer exchange was performed in 95% 18O2–5% 16O2 atmosphere at the total pressure of 0.2 atm.
