Abstract

An incremental parser is useful for parsing small changes to large program files. Traditionally, incremental parsers must retain large amounts of data between parses and need special parsing algorithms. This makes them usually unsuitable as a front end for CASE tools. This article describes an incremental parsing mechanism that uses less space than other methods. It is built from existing techniques and tools and is designed for the level of detail needed by CASE tools. We implemented the parser for our Ada Maintenance tool kit.
