Abstract
Most commercially available data dictionary systems are stand-alone solutions geared for use with a particular database management system. In order to effectively control the data resource, a data dictionary system should provide direct interfaces to other software, however. In particular, interfaces to different data management systems and the possibility to describe the usage of data in application programs should be supported. However, the integration of data dictionary systems and programming language compilers has been neglected, so far. Today, program descriptions must be entered separately and in special data dictionary formats. Instead, data dictionaries should be populated directly from the source code being compiled, so that the correctness of dictionary data is ensured. A binary ER model is proposed for the representation of dictionary data and schemas which deal with data and program descriptions are developed.
