Abstract

The performance of transaction processing systems is affected by contention for hardware as well as software resources (data objects). Software contention becomes prominent in database systems because concurrency control mechanism, which is used to insure integrity of the database, restrict concurrent and conflicting access to data objects of a database. Locking is the most popular scheme to achieve concurrency control in database systems. Performance of a database system is greatly determined by its underlying concurrency control algorithm because it determines the performance degradation in presence of software contentions. In this paper, we will examine the issues in the performance analysis of concurrency control algorithms and their affect on the overall database system performance. With many alternatives now available to design a database system, there is a tremendous need to assess the suitability of a design to a particular environment and need. In this paper, we will discuss difficulties in modeling concurrency control algorithms and describe how these difficulties have been overcome.

Abstract

This paper identified the basic services required from a communication subsystem to support a distributed, reliable, reconfigurable, and replicated database environment. These services include multicasting, remote procedure calls (RPC), inexpensive data-gram services, and efficient local interprocess communication (IPC). Data are included from experiments that measure communication performance in four areas: (i) layered implementations of communication protocols, (ii) local interprocess communication methods, (iii) multicasting, and (iv) commitment processing. We have used the results of those experimental studies to design and implement a new communication facility. It features an unobtrusive IPC paradigm and a transaction-oriented multicasting mechanism.

Abstract

Database security is a rapidly growing research area, spawning work in several different subareas proceeding independently in many directions. In surveying the subject this paper draws together some of this diverse work and attempts to indicate relationships among the parts. A theme of the paper is to recommend a system architecture approach to database security. Such a view is more likely to bring modularity, simplicity, isolatability and flexibility to overall system solutions than will ad hoc attempts to tune-up individual parts.

Systems requirements are stated and the relation to operating system security is discussed. Security kernels, their history as well as their advantages and problems, are described. Security requirements found in databases, but not in operating systems, are introduced. Some models and experimental systems are reviewed, representing non-architectural and architectural approaches to non-secure and secure database systems. Some conclusions and trends for the furure are discussed.

Abstract

Summary

The previous chapter addressed the issue of operating systems evaluation. It focused on the use of testbeds and commercial-grade software to assess the relative performance of four operating systems. This chapter follows a similar path; we will be evaluating industrial-grade software products used in many applications. We will discuss database on-line transaction processing as the overall application domain. The main focus, however, is the assessment of four commercial-grade database systems running on a fixed set of testbed hardware and systems software (the operating system).
