Pathogenesis of abortion of bovine brucellosis

Abstract

Bovine brucellosis is a major disease of cattle characterized by abortion during the last trimester of gestation. During many years important pieces of research have been done looking for a better understanding of this particular phenomenon. Yet, the fact that the abortion takes place in the last period of gestation result in a fascinating interrogant for such a unique event. The present review includes most of the information available regarding to this matter. Emphasis is done in the interaction of Brucella abortus with the trophoblastic cells of the bovine placenta.

Résumé

La brucellose bovine est une maladie majeure des bovins caractérisée par des avortements pendant le dernier trimestre de gestation. Des travaux de recherche très importants ont été faits pendant plusieurs années pour élucider le mécanisme de ce phénomène particulier. Le fait que l'avortement se produise pendant la dernière période de gestation reste encore à expliquer. Ce travail rassemble la plupart des informations disponibles sur ce sujet avec une attention particulière sur l'interaction de Brucella abortus avec les trophoblastes du placenta des bovins.

      While unable to sustain an intestinal infection, oral gavage with live brucellosis vaccines has been successfully used for brucellosis vaccination of laboratory animals [49,70–73], livestock [74–76], red deer [77], and nonhuman primates [73]. In contrast, the naso-oropharyngeal lymph nodes (LNs) that drain the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract are susceptible to Brucella infections [78] as a result of animals sniffing or licking Brucella-infected aborted fetuses and/or infected placental tissues [79,80]. In humans, past clinical cases of brucellosis involved occurrence of pharyngitis [30–34], which can result in brucellae sequestration in the cervical LNs (CLNs) [34].
