Severe late Miocene droughts affected western Eurasia
2021, Global and Planetary ChangeCitation Excerpt :All warming events observed in the Panagia section are accompanied by carbonate deposition (Palcu et al., 2021), suggesting coeval changes in the chemistry and circulation of the basin. The δ13CC37 values from Panagia (−26.5‰ to −20.5‰) are close to global upper Miocene values (−25‰ to −21‰) (e.g. Pagani et al., 1999), yet somewhat different to those measured in the recent Black Sea (−26‰ to −29‰) (e.g. Freeman and Wakeham, 1992). Important is the 3‰ decrease in δ13CC37alkenones (Fig. 3D, Supplementary Table 3) between 9.66 and 9.28 Ma, that parallels an increase in δ2HC37 up to −126‰, a value typical for evaporative conditions.
