Cattle were used for genetics, nutrition, reproduction, and physiology research but were managed like production animals (e.g., Baker and Quesenberry 1944; Patterson et al. 1987; Perry et al. 2005). Specifically, in fall, winter, and early spring, cows consumed dormant forage or harvested feed consisting of hay, silage, and sometimes grain.
