Abstract

A finite element model coupled to a numerical representation of one-dimensional wave propagation is used to model stress wave propagation in the structure of a large shock tunnel. Modelling difficulties and the method of coupling the two types of model are described. Results are presented which indicate that stress wave damper rods, attached to the tunnel, are effective as a means of controlling stress levels.
