Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus infection of SJL/J and C57BL/6J mice: Models for multiple sclerosis and epilepsy
2017, Journal of NeuroimmunologyCitation Excerpt :It was not until 1975, when Lipton described an experimental mouse model of TMEV-DA-induced demyelination, that this infection model became a commonly used animal model to study MS (Lipton, 1975). TMEV is a non-enveloped, single stranded RNA virus from the cardiovirus genus, picornavirus family (Clatch et al., 1986; Ohara et al., 1988). TMEV normally infects mouse gut without causing symptoms, however TMEV can, rarely, naturally infect the CNS.
