Silica-generated ROS could induce cell membrane damage via lipid peroxidation that may subsequently lead to increased cellular permeability [106], perturbation of intracellular calcium homeostasis [107] and alterations in signaling pathways [108]. In most studies single cell lines have been used and the results naturally vary depending on the cell line under study.
