2016, TectonophysicsCitation Excerpt :In contrast, north-eastern Taiwan underwent post-collisional processes and has been considered to be incorporated in the opening of the southern Ryukyu back-arc system (Teng et al., 2000). Opening of Okinawa Trough and the retreat of Ryukyu trench together with the ongoing collision process in north-western Taiwan results in transtensional and extensional regimes (Hu et al., 1996, 2001, 2002), as revealed by the presence of Quaternary extensional structures (Lee and Wang, 1988; Lu et al., 1995), extensional earthquake focal mechanisms (Kao et al., 1998) and GPS measurement (Yu et al., 1999; Hu et al., 2002; Rau et al., 2008). The Taipei Basin is located at the northern part of Taiwan, surrounded by Tatun Volcano group to the north, the Linku Tableland to the west, and the northwest hills of western Foothills and Hsüehshan Range to the southeast (Fig. 1a and b).
First-order estimate of the Canary Islands plate-scale stress field: Implications for volcanic hazard assessment
2016, TectonophysicsCitation Excerpt :The objective of this work is to provide a first-order estimate of the plate-scale tectonic stresses acting on the Canary Islands, modelling numerically the distribution of the minimum and maximum horizontal compressive stresses (Shmin and SHmax, respectively) and the tectonic regime in the area. For this, we have performed a series of 2D finite element models of plate scale kinematics assuming plane stress approximation as previously adopted by other authors (e.g. Hu et al., 1996; Mantovani et al., 2000). Results obtained are used to design a regional scale stress field model for the Canary Islands aimed to evaluate the effect of archipelago-scale structures on the distribution of the maximum horizontal compressive stress and related stress regime.
