Abstract

Future objectives of waste management in a developing country such as India will be different from those in developed countries for various reasons. This paper describes a futures study into the objectives of waste management in India at the aggregate as well as sectoral levels. It employs consensus methods to generate and analyze present and future objectives of waste management in India. The objectives have been classified depending on their driver power and dependence using indirect relationship MICMAC analysis. Interpretive structural modeling has been carried out to develop a hierarchy of actions required to achieve the future objectives of waste management.

Evaluating prioritization of strategic business model for efficient wastewater resource management system

In recent decades, the world has witnessed a sudden rise in population and rapid urbanization. This has led to an increase in the water demand and consequently an upsurge in wastewater. Water scarcity, coupled with untreated wastewater, has become a major concern throughout the world. Municipalities are challenged with the task of treating wastewater and meeting domestic, agricultural, and industrial demands. Mismanagement of wastewater results in economic, social and environmental loss. The high concentration of population, lack of sanitation and water security, reduced awareness, and evident pollution have made India a home full of opportunity and innovation in the wastewater management (WWM) business. The paper gives a comprehensive review to understand the wastewater management and business approach. The research uses Total Interpretive Structural Modelling (TISM) to identify, acknowledge, and interpret the major factors for the stakeholders and for future companies who wish to venture into the wastewater management business. The study provides insight into developing a circular economy solution and gives a vivid framework highlighting the relevant factors for a successful WWM business. The study also provides direction to the practitioners who are involved in the WWM industry and helps evaluate their options, prioritizing resource-efficient solutions.
From moon landing to metaverse: Tracing the evolution of Technological Forecasting and Social Change

Technological Forecasting and Social Change (TFSC) is one of the most prominent journals to focus on the methodologies and practices of technological forecasting and futures studies. This study aims to analyse the topical structure of TFSC and track the most cited articles published in the journal using a combination of a structural topic model (STM) and bibliometric analysis. The STM reveals 18 prominent topics in TFSC, and the topical quality of the STM results is verified based on semantic coherence and topic exclusivity scores as well as an assessment of the correlations among topics. The STM also tracks the temporal variations in topical prevalence that occurred from 1969 to 2022, shedding light on the changing popularity of each topic. The bibliometric analysis presents a decade-by-decade perspective on the most cited articles and the geographical dispersion of authors affiliated with TFSC, thereby providing a truly global perspective on the journal's publishing activity.
Ranking sustainable urban mobility indicators and their matching transport policies to support liveable city Futures: A MICMAC approach

Understanding, promoting and managing sustainable urban mobility better is very critical in the midst of an unprecedented climate crisis. Identifying, evaluating, benchmarking and prioritising its key indicators is a way to ensure that policy-makers will develop those transport strategies and measures necessary to facilitate a more effective transition to liveable futures. After identifying from the literature and the European Commission (EC) directives the indicators that are underpinning the powerful scheme of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) that each municipality in Europe may implement to elevate the wellbeing of its population, we adopt a Cross Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification (MICMAC) approach to assess, contextualise and rank them. Through conducting a qualitative study that involved a narrative literature review and more importantly in-depth discussions with 28 elite participants, each of them with expertise in sustainable development, we are able to designate the Sustainable Urban Mobility Indicators (SUMIs) that are the most (and least) impactful. According to our analysis the most powerful indicator is traffic congestion, followed by affordability of public transport for the poorest, energy efficiency, access to mobility service and multimodal integration. This analysis allows us to then match them with the most applicable strategies that may ensure a holistic approach towards supporting in practical terms sustainable mobility in the city level. These are in ranking order: Transit Oriented Development (TOD); public and active transport enhancement; parking policies, vehicle circulation and ownership measures; telecommuting and car-pooling.
