Whitening of fire opal: Transformation of silica in soils
2023, Chemical GeologyCitation Excerpt :External whitening in nature, involving the mobilization of trivalent iron impurity in opal (either in the form of isolated atoms or nano-inclusions of oxy-hydroxides), can involve two mechanisms: acidolysis and complexolysis. Depending on the nature of the compound (crystallized or not) and the pH of the fluid, these two mechanisms can be more or less effective (Lefebvre-Drouet and Rousseau, 1995). On the first hand, the solubilization of crystallized compounds requires an acidic environment and acidolysis is then the predominant factor.
