The relaxation of the compliance has been observed in a single crystal of zirconium containing 5000 wt.ppm of oxygen. The relaxation is attributed to the stress induced reorientation of substitutional (s) — interstitial oxygen (i) pairs. For this relaxation , where is the atomic jump rate for jumps parallel to the basal plane. The results lead to the diffusion equation for basal plane diffusion which is consistent with bulk diffusion equations for oxygen in alpha-zirconium reported in the literature. It is shown that some of the strain ageing results reported in the literature are consistent with dislocation locking by ordering of s-i pairs.
