In traditional Chinese medicine, the extracts of R. cordifolia roots have a series of medicinal properties, including antitumor (Hasuda et al., 2011; Jeong et al., 2012), antiepileptic (Verma et al., 2019), antiviral (Meena et al., 2010), anti-inflammatory (Shen et al., 2018), antimicrobial, and hepatoprotective effects (Jun et al., 2011; Kale et al., 2017; Kumar et al., 2016). Chemical investigations of this plant, especially its roots, have reported several bioactive components, such as anthraquinones and its glycosides (Tessier et al., 1981; Vidal-Tessier et al., 1987), naphthoquinones and its glycosides (Itokawa et al., 1993; Koyama et al., 1992), mollugins (Son et al., 2008), alizarins (Chang et al., 2000), lucidin pimeverosides, peptides (Chen et al., 2015; Hitotsuyanagi et al., 2012a, b; Lee et al., 2008; Takeya et al., 1993), and terpenoids (Arisawa et al., 1986; Ibraeim and Ahmed, 2009; Talapatra et al., 1981; Wu et al., 1991). Recent pharmacological studies of the extract from the aerial part of R. cordifolia have demonstrated promising anti-diarrheal, anti-inflammatory (Gong et al., 2017), and antiviral properties (Sun et al., 2016).
