Proton-proton small angle scattering and total cross section of 10.0 GeV⧸c

A lower bound on the photon-photon total cross section following from factorization of Regge singularities is presented. The bound seems to lie quite close to the recent PETRA measurements when the gamma-gamma c.m. energy is above 6 GeV.

The 1 GeV high resolution proton nucleus scattering is reviewed. The effects from nuclear correlations are considered in detail. The sensitivity of differential cross sections to the one particle density and NN amplitude parameters are demonstrated. An analysis of the elastic proton scattering from the zero-spin nuclei and the obtained information on the neutron and matter distributions are presented. The scattering from a few nonspherical light nuclei is analysed. The first results on proton-nucleus polarization are discussed.

A hydrogen-filled ionization chamber used as a target and as a detector of the recoil protons was proposed to be applied for studies of small-angle hadron-proton elastic scattering. The analysis of signals from the chamber electrodes and delay times of the signals made it possible to determine the energy and the emission angle of the recoils, as well as to separate the target volume inside the volume of the chamber. The protons were detected in the energy range 1.0–4.0 MeV, with the energy resolution fwhm = 40 keV. The method can be used in a wide range of incident particle momenta at beam intensities of 10⁴–10⁵ particles/s.

A new method of analysing experimental data on pp and pp and $\text{p}$p scattering is used to obtain an accurate determination of the real parts of the forward scattering amplitudes. The locations of zeros of the amplitudes are calculated by means of the analytical continuation of the scattering amplitude parametrized in the physical region to complex values of energy. The method exploits the known analyticity properties of the scattering amplitude and experimental data in a limited energy range. However, unlike conventional dispersion relation calculations, it requires no assumptions about the amplitudes in the unphysical and asymptotic regions.

The techniques of complex angular momentum theory including Regge poles and cut contributions are used to fit all existing experimental data for π^±N, K^±N and $\text{NN}\text{−}\text{N}\text{N}$ scattering and charge exchange processes.

The j plane structure of the vertex function of the Pomeron suggested by the two-pole multiperipheral model exhibits a fine structure which depends on the triple Pomeron coupling. It is found that this structure alone may explain the energy dependence of the slope parameter of the p-p diffraction peak even with an arbitrarily small slope of the Pomeranchuk trajectory.
