Abstract

Transient refractive index changes induced by a pump pulse are probed in the temporal domain with another pulse at a different wavelength. The phase modulation experienced by the probe beam is analysed by the measurement of its wavefront deformation in the far field, using spatial filters of various shapes. The technique is applied to the determination of low-frequency polar and non-polar phonons in crystals.
