Abstract

The near infrared dispersion of the third order nonlinear optical susceptibility, χ(3), of poly [5, 7-dodecadiyn-1, 12-diol-bis (n- butoxycarbonyl-methyl-urethane)], poly (4-BCMU), is investigated by third-harmonic-generation and two-photon-absorption. A four level model gives a good fit to the measured dispersions in the range of 0.770 μm to 1.904μm. The coupling between the first 1Bu state and the two 1Ag states, located above and below it, control the dispersion of χ(3) in the linear transparency region of poly (4-BCMU).

Polydiacetylenes have been extensively explored for their nonlinear optical studies. This includes polytoluene sulfonate polydiacetylene (PDA-PTS) [1–4], poly [4, 6-decadiene-1, 10-diol-bis (3-butoxycarbonyl-methyl-urethane)] (PDA-3-BCMU) [5], poly[5,7-dodecadiene-1, 12-diol-bis (4-butoxycarbonyl-methyl-urethane)] (PDA-4-BCMU) [6,7] and poly[4, 6-decadiene-1, 10-diol-bis (9-butoxycarbonyl-methyl-urethane)] (PDA-9-BCMU) [8] etc. However, none of the existing conjugated polymers so far possesses the requisite figure of merit for the practical realization of all optical signal processing devices.

A detailed discussion on the wavelength dispersion of THG susceptibility was made by Stegeman et al. [29,30], and the spectral dependence of THG and electroabsorption were measured for PDA [31]. Using the apparatus developed in the present study, we measured ∣χ(3)∣ of a film of PDA–4BCMU, as shown in Fig. 5, together with data taken by the point-by-point method in Ref. [29]. The peak value of ∣χ(3)∣ in our measurement was found to be 7.7 × 10−11 esu.
