In the rat, there is also a decrease in the expression of Cx43 (mRNA and protein) during postnatal development (although it is preceded by an increase) [49,50]. Simplistically, a decrease in connexin expression is expected to result in a decrease in the conduction velocity and yet, in rabbit atrium at least, there is an increase in the conduction velocity during postnatal development [51].
