Due to limitations in osmotic regulation, freshwater land crabs usually complete development to a juvenile form of the adult within the egg—most species hatch from eggs as miniaturized adults (Anger, 1995; Lutz, 1969). Leaving the sea presents significant challenges in respiration, metabolism, and biomechanics, not to mention the numerous differences in photic environments like those detailed earlier in this review.

A strategy that has been suggested in oxygen-deficient conditions is the corresponding reduction of embryonic metabolism, but in more extreme cases, the use of anaerobic metabolic pathways may be advantageous (Anger, 1995; Segura et al., 2015, 2016). The gastropod Acanthina monodon (Pallas, 1774) is found along the coast of Chile both intertidally and in shallow rocky subtidal regions (Osorio et al., 1979; Reid and Osorio, 2000).
