Effect of interflow on soil drainage

Abstract

A sand tank study was carried out to compare the performance of different drainage configurations on the rate of removal of water in the steady state and on the rate of draw-down of the water table in the non-steady state. A shallow layer of high permeability overlying a deep layer of lower permeability was used to encourage interflow. A finite element solution was used to examine the effects of different drain spacings and ratios of soil permeabilities on drain performance under field conditions.
