2023, Chemical GeologyCitation Excerpt :Middle Sister may have lacked a large intermediate chamber such as proposed above for South Sister; small batches of dacitic magma being generated by assimilation-fractional crystallization processes involving mixing of as much as eight wt% of silicic material in conjunction with substantial fractionation, most likely occurring in small, relatively isolated chambers. The coincidence of unusually abundant silicic magmatism at South Sister with “whatever combination of mantle flow and extension” was associated with the High Lava Plains was noted by Hildreth (2007). The High Lava Plains extend from southeastern Oregon to Newberry Volcano and mark a progression of silicic magmatism to the west-northwest over the past 10 Ma (MacLeod et al., 1975; Jordan and Grunder, 2004; Ford et al., 2013).

2022, Ore Geology ReviewsCitation Excerpt :On a plot of Dy/Yb versus SiO2 (Fig. 16c), the IMG(P) samples show amphibole-dominated fractionation trends. Fractional crystallization of amphibole from basaltic or mafic andesitic magmas would result in the depletion of Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er relative to LREE and Yb and Lu in the residual melt (Green and Pearson, 1985; Davidson et al., 2007), leading to the generation of slightly concave REE patterns and low HREE contents for the rocks that crystallized from the residual magmas. On a plot of Sr versus SiO2, Sr contents decrease with the increase of SiO2 contents (Fig. 16d), and the weak negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.73 to 0.77) of the IMG(P) (Fig. 10b) can be explained by simultaneous fractional crystallization of plagioclase together with amphibole.
Mantle source heterogeneity in a Neoproterozoic back-arc basin: Geochemical and thermodynamic modeling of the volcanic section of Wadi Ghadir ophiolite, Egypt
2022, Precambrian ResearchCitation Excerpt :Moreover, the melt compositions (calculated by the reverse modeling) show that the main fractionated phase in all melt types was clinopyroxene (37–40%). Sm, Yb and other heavy rare earth elements are preferably partitioned in clinopyroxene rather than in other silicate phases in spinel lherzolite (Green and Pearson, 1985). Data of the primitive magma compositions are plotted in the binary Sm vs. Sm/Yb space (Fig. 15) with two mantle sources; a fertile primitive mantle source (PM) and a depleted mantle source (DMM).
