Role of calpains in promoting desmin filaments depolymerization and muscle atrophy
2020, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - Molecular Cell ResearchCitation Excerpt :This coupling between desmin loss and myofibril breakdown defines a new concept in the muscle field, further supporting the view that muscle atrophy is an ordered process involving early and late phases. Given the important role of desmin IF for Z-bands integrity [26], and because thin filaments are also anchored and stabilized at this region [27](Fig. 1), the initial dissociation of desmin filaments during atrophy probably reduces the stability of Z-band and thin filaments. In fact, the bona fide Z-band component, α-actinin, is degraded during atrophy just when the loss of desmin IF is accelerated [11,20].
Modulation of the migration and differentiation potential of adult bone marrow stromal stem cells by nitric oxide
2012, BiomaterialsCitation Excerpt :Desmin contributes to the structural integrity and function of the myofibrillar contractile apparatus in smooth, skeletal and cardiac muscle cells. Desmin forms a linear lattice work in ECMs in association with the developing myofibrils [54,55]. Limiting the availability of desmin in early developing cardiomyocytes results in fragmentation of the myofibrils, disoriented Z-discs and loss for sarcomeric actin [56].
