Deciphering the source of banded iron formations in the North China Craton

2022, Ore Geology ReviewsCitation Excerpt :Therefore, the geochemical features through trace element composition of Kiriburu-Meghahatuburu BIFs are consistent with the other global Superior-type BIFs (Fig. 6A). PAAS normalized profiles of BIFs have revealed that a positive Ce anomaly in BIFs indicates precipitation of silica (chert/jasper) under acidic conditions (pH ≤ 5) where as precipitation of alternate layers of iron associated with silica bands occurs in alkaline conditions (Murray et al., 1992; German et al., 1995) (pH ≥ 5, Gourcerol et al., 2016; Fig. 6C). Some of the studied BHJ (KBHJ1, KBHJ5 and MBHJ3 with Ce/Ce* ratios 0.79, 0.88 and 0.84 respectively; Appendix-1 and Fig. 6C) exhibits a weak positive Ce anomaly which corroborates with the deposition of the KMID oxide facies iron ores at high pH (>5), i.e., under alkaline conditions..
The temporal variability of hydrothermal activity of Wocan hydrothermal field, Carlsberg Ridge, northwest Indian Ocean
2021, Ore Geology ReviewsCitation Excerpt :The U/Fe and V/Fe ratios in Wocan-2 sediments were significantly higher than those in Wocan-1 sediments but lower than or close to those in local ridge flank sediments (Fig. 10). The enriched levels of U and V in hydrothermal sediments could not have been supplied directly by the cooling of and precipitation from high-temperature vent-fluids, as such fluids are depleted in U and V. Instead extensive interaction with, and precipitation from seawater is believed to be the cause of these enrichments (German et al., 1993, 1995; Mills et al., 1993; Dias et al., 2008). Thus, the high ratios of U/Fe and V/Fe in Wocan-2 sediments can be explained by the up-take of U and V from seawater.
