Thermolytic debinding of ceramic mouldings using overpressure

Abstract

A model describing the removal of organic binder from ceramic mouldings by thermolytic decomposition has been extended to predict safe heating rates under modestly increased ambient pressure (0.1–1.0 MPa). The model predictions were tested using polyα-methylstyrene as binder in an over-pressure furnace. Agreement was found to be good at lower pressures, but the considerable increases in permissible heating rates predicted at high pressures were not achieved in practice. The elevation of critical rate is explained in terms of suppression of boiling of the volatile products of decomposition. A similar study was carried out to discover the effect of adding di-tridecylphthalate to the polymer. This makes the model system closer to practical viability and the predicted effect of pressure was still observed at pressures up to 0.6 MPa.
