Hyperventilation and electroconvulsive therapy: A literature review
2018, General Hospital PsychiatryEffects of the concurrent use of a reduced dose of propofol with divided supplemental remifentanil and moderate hyperventilation on duration and morphology of electroconvulsive therapy-induced electroencephalographic seizure activity: A randomized controlled trial
2017, Journal of Clinical AnesthesiaCitation Excerpt :In fact, the percentages of EEG morphologic factors as causes of the increase in energy dosage were greater in group P/N (50%) than in group RP/H (30%) in the fourth and fifth sessions, though the difference was not statistically significant. Regarding postictal suppression as a predictor of optimal EEG features, Swartz et al. [15] reported that postictal suppression index (PSI) below 74% suggests that restimulation at a higher dose should be considered, and increased PSI may imply increased efficacy of ECT [12,24,25]. The addition of remifentanil to propofol anesthesia was reported to provide an increase in PSI, though its increase might be relatively small and not be clinically significant [9].
Hypocapnia and hyperoxia induction using a hyperventilation protocol in electroconvulsive therapy
2017, Revista de Psiquiatria y Salud MentalThe difficult-to-treat electroconvulsive therapy patient - Strategies for augmenting outcomes
2010, Journal of Affective DisordersCitation Excerpt :In this study, the initial seizure was not included. In a study of 15 depressed patients, Pande et al. (1990) found a relationship between end-tidal CO2 prior to ECT and the duration of the initial seizures, which was not sustained later in the course. These results were recently replicated in a small, randomised study of 19 patients; however the results are confounded to some extent by the use of age-based dosing rather than stimulus titration (Sawayama et al., 2008).
