2020, European Journal of PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Preclinical studies suggest that glibenclamide can induce anti-proliferative effects by blocking potassium channels, thereby initiating apoptosis (Abdul and Hoosein, 2002a, b). However, at least 10-fold higher than the therapeutic plasma concentration of glibenclamide is required to elicit this beneficial effect in human lung cancer cells (Golstein et al., 1999; Lautier et al., 1996; Payen et al., 2001). Indeed, a substantial number of clinical reports indicate that glibenclamide use was associated with a higher risk for cancer (Bo et al., 2013; Laskar et al., 2018; Monami et al., 2009).
