2021, Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic MaterialsCitation Excerpt :Provided a good combination of magnetic properties, PMs based on τ-MnAl would be able to compete with bonded RE-PMs, while outperforming ferrites and offering significant advantages in terms of materials costs compared to other RE-free PMs (Alnico and Pt-Co alloys). The ferromagnetic τ-phase is metastable and can be obtained from the hexagonal hcp ε-phase via a nucleation and growth process described as a massive transformation [8,9]; or through displacive or martensitic transformation following metastable B19 ordering within the hcp phase (ε → ε’→τ)[10,11]. The nucleation of the τ-phase from the ε-phase can be obtained by a controlled annealing process.
