Critical Care ConnectionSurviving Sepsis Campaign Guideline Update 2012: What Does it Mean for Perianesthesia Nursing?
Section snippets
Guideline Update Highlights
Changes in the new sepsis guidelines focus on restoring tissue perfusion, appropriate antibiotic therapy, and infection prevention. The guidelines strongly recommend the use of protocolized resuscitation using crystalloid. Vascular access should be established if not already present. The previously recommended initial fluid bolus of 15 to 20 mL/kg was increased to 30 mL/kg with goals to achieve a central venous pressure of 8 to 12 mm Hg, MAP of 65 mm Hg or higher, urine output of 0.5 mL/kg/hour or
Prevention of Infection
Although awareness and rapid recognition of sepsis in patients remains a priority, several nurse-driven interventions should be implemented to reduce the risk of this complication in the care of postoperative patients. The guidelines highlight several infection control practices essential to prevention of infection that should be implemented in the care of patients with sepsis. Although this is not meant to be an all-inclusive discussion, the goal is to point out elements of care in which
Summary
Perianesthesia nurses are vital to efforts recognizing surgical patients who are at risk for sepsis and implementing strategies to prevent infections that may lead to sepsis. In the event a critically ill patient develops this condition, responding quickly through the implementation of the surviving sepsis bundle is an essential first step in effectively treating patients with sepsis.
