2024, European Journal of Operational ResearchPerspectives on how to conduct responsible anti-human trafficking research in operations and analytics
2023, European Journal of Operational ResearchCitation Excerpt :There are several success stories of our field impacting change for social good, including ongoing efforts to eradicate polio (Thompson, Duintjer Tebbens, Pallansch, Wassilak, & Cochi, 2015); stem the illicit drug trade (Behrens, Caulkins, Tragler, & Feichtinger, 2000); increase the number of paired kidney donations (Anderson et al., 2015), and inform COVID-19 safety protocols (Keskinocak, Oruc, Baxter, Asplund, & Serban, 2020; Schmidt & Albert, 2021) among many others. Kaplan (2008) overviews several examples of how OR methods have been employed to support policy for the benefit of a community. It is our hope that the OR and Analytics communities progress toward a deeper commitment to responsible, impactful research that not only builds academic knowledge, but prioritizes working alongside communities, survivors, and practitioners to develop models that capture the nuances of human trafficking in a manner that is useful for developing policies and interventions that enact social change.
Quantitative Investigation of Wildlife Trafficking Supply Chains: A Review
2023, Omega (United Kingdom)Citation Excerpt :However, there are challenges such as suppliers being unwilling to adopt the technology and “garbage in, garbage out [119]”. The effective use of limited resources is a key characteristic of operations research problems. [120] states many areas use traditional operations approaches in addressing community problems, including urban services, crime, drugs, violence, and public health.
Operational Research for, with, and by citizens: An overview
2023, European Journal of Operational ResearchApplying systems thinking models of organizational design and change in community operational research
2018, European Journal of Operational ResearchCitation Excerpt :We argue that (1) underlying even hierarchical organizations and Jackson's (1988) coercive systems are distributed networks of individuals who share a collective interest to a greater or lesser extent, and (2) all organizations/groups are CAS and therefore amenable to a systems approach. This makes the divide between Community OR and traditional OR, which has opened up because of historical differences in approaches, less analytically fruitful and practical than it at first might appear (see also Kaplan, 2008; Rosenhead, 1993). Certainly both fields are interdisciplinary and benefit from systemic approaches – Community OR even more so given the additional complexities involved (the existence of more and diverse stakeholders, plus socio-cultural, political, environmental, and economic factors).
ScriptsMap: A tool for designing multi-method policy-making workshops
2011, OmegaCitation Excerpt :However, the aim of the ScriptsMap development process is not to produce a ‘final product’ but rather act as a framework to support both conversations about, and designs for, workshops. It is thus a framework designed to facilitate a conversation that spans the boundaries that separate the perspectives of the different modellers (‘boundary object’ [14,29,48]) which while not intending to be comprehensive encourages deeper understanding and learning. The deeper understanding and learning led to the design gradually gaining stability.
