The report by Hjelkrem et al13 in this issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology should be assessed in historical context. PEG-3350 (polyethylene glycol [PEG]-electrolytes [ELS]) was introduced in the early 1980s14 as a high-molecular-weight balanced lavage solution resulting in no net movement of water or electrolytes and improved efficacy over traditional standard barium enema bowel preparations. It overcame significant tolerability and intravascular volume issues of its predecessors.
