A proposed conceptual model of nursing and population health
2015, Nursing OutlookCitation Excerpt :Overcoming the challenge of a focus on populations rather than individuals requires an upstream approach, which within the context of the CMNPH includes not only upstream factors but also population factors and health care system factors. As Bekemeier (2008) explained, “our experiences with patients or populations, and the communities in which they live, ought to be the impetus for making our primary responsibility be practice and research that enables healthy policy change and identifies innovative strategies for addressing the social determinants of [population] health” (p. 51). Shifting the focus to populations requires overcoming many nurses' tolerance of a perceived culture of oppression (Anderson, 2000).
