Île d'Oléron, août 1996, fête de la mer à La Cotinière: naufrage d'un chalutier

Lors d'une fête de la mer à La Cotiniére (île d'Oléron), un chalutier a chaviré, cinq personnes ont péri, 15 ont été hospitalisées et quatre ont été portées disparues. Les secours et les soins ont été perturbés par l'affluence de personnes plus ou moins impliquées. L'expérience a montré la nécessité d'adapter l'organisation des soins et secours à l'événement mais aussi à la réponse spontanée d'une population. Cet accident souligne également la nécessaire coordination entre autorités maritimes et terrestres. II rappelle l'acuité des problémes de communication et d'acheminement des moyens logistiques et humains.

Summary

During “Festival of the Sea” celebrations in La Cotinière off the coast of Oléron Island, a trawler capsized, five people died in the incident, 15 others were hospitaized, and four more were declared lost at sea. Rescue and emergency care efforts were disrupted by he numbers of people present at the scene. This experience demonstrated the need to adapt the organization of emergency services not only to emergency itself, but also to the spontaneous reaction of the population. The accident also underlines the necessity for coordination between land and maritime authorities. It highlights the acuteness of problems concerning communication and the dispatching of means, logistical human.
