Management of intentional overdose of insulin glargine
2012, Endocrinologia y NutricionLantus insulin overdose: A case report
2011, Journal of Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :Other treatment modalities have been studied in the treatment of hypoglycemia in overdoses of oral hypoglycemic agents, and suggested in the treatment of insulin glargine overdose (6). Glucagon has been clearly demonstrated as an effective treatment for hypoglycemia (18,19). However, there is theoretical concern that it may cause rebound hypoglycemia because it acts to stimulate endogenous insulin secretion.
Lantus Overdose: Case Presentation and Management Options
2009, Journal of Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :Glucagon is a naturally produced pancreatic hormone that is used in the emergent treatment of many conditions, including hypoglycemia, esophageal food impactions, beta-blocker and calcium channel overdose, gastrointestinal bleed, and shock states (10,11). In the treatment of hypoglycemia, glucagon acts by inducing glycongenolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver, proteolysis in muscle tissue, and lipolysis in adipose tissue to increase serum glucose concentrations (12,13). Multiple studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of intramuscular and subcutaneous glucagon for the treatment of hypoglycemia (10,13,14).
Emergency Management of Oral Hypoglycemic Drug Toxicity
2007, Emergency Medicine Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Glucagon is of particular interest to emergency personnel because it is efficacious for the treatment of hypoglycemia when given subcutaneously or intramuscularly, thereby negating the need for an IV line. Numerous studies have shown the efficacy and safety of glucagon for the treatment of hypoglycemia [50–52]. Vukmir and colleagues [52] showed an approximate 100 mg/dL increase in serum glucose in 49 of 50 prehospital hypoglycemic patients who received subcutaneous glucagon.
