2017, Journal of Chemical NeuroanatomyCitation Excerpt :Taking into account that markers for GABAergic neurons in the SE are CaBPs, which occur both in the guinea pig LS and MS throughout ontogeny, it may be suggested that different CaBPs together with GABA may participate in the development and/or generation of the hippocampal theta rhythm via the MS, the LS or both these regions. A lot of evidence indicates that GABA may function as a neurotransmitter, which, just like CaBP, plays important roles during brain development e.g.: regulation of neurite outgrowth, synapse formation, cell division or gene expression (Chen et al., 1996; Ben-Ari et al., 1994; LoTurco et al., 1995; van den Pol et al., 1998). Among the studied CaBPs, high CB immunoreactivity was constant throughout ontogeny.

2014, Anesthesiology ClinicsCitation Excerpt :It has been suggested that the GABAA receptor could be excitatory rather than inhibitory in early infancy, explaining this paradoxic reaction to anesthesia in young children. As the child matures, the GABAA receptor transforms into an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and the reaction no longer occurs, as in the adult.102 These receptors could be excitatory rather than inhibitory in early infancy because of a switch from high to low chloride content in the neurons.102
