Halogen atom transfer radical addition of α-polychloroesters to olefins promoted by Fe0 filings
The Kharasch addition of methyl 2,2-dichlorocarboxylates or trichloro acetic acid derivatives to alkenes, affording the corresponding 1:1 adducts, is promoted by the iron filings/N,N-dimethylformamide system.

2015, TetrahedronCitation Excerpt :In 1961, iron chlorides was found to be able to increase the chain transfer constant of ATRA,1–9 which marked the beginning of transition-metal-mediated ATRAs. With the continuous efforts of a number of research groups, ATRAs mediated by Ru, Fe, Ni, Ag and Cu have been gradually identified as efficient approaches to difunctionalization of alkenes and alkynes.10–19 To date, the transition-metal-mediated ATRA has attracted major attentions in this field.14,16,18,19
