Keratinocytes regulate the function of melanocytes
2014, Dermatologica SinicaCitation Excerpt :This distribution determines the coat coloring of animals.19 Eumelanin-containing melanosomes (i.e., eumelanosomes) are elliptical in morphology with longitudinal depositions of pigments in intraluminal fibrils.20 By contrast, pheomelanin-containing melanosomes (i.e., pheomelanosomes) are spherical with granular depositions of pigments within multivesicular bodies.
Repeat domains of melanosome matrix protein Pmel17 orthologs form amyloid fibrils at the acidic melanosomal pH
2011, Journal of Biological ChemistryCitation Excerpt :Melanosomes, early or late, are acidic compartments (13, 16–19). This acidification is necessary for proper melanin formation, as shown, for example, by the lack of pigmentation of mice with a P (for pink eyed) mutation defective for melanosome acidification (20), and these mutants have disordered melanosome filaments (21). Of the several human Pmel17 fragments we examined, only RPT (hlRPT) (residues 315–444) formed amyloid (22), and that only at the mildly acid pH typical of melanosomes (22, 23).
