2020, International Journal of PharmaceuticsPhosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) enriched mixed micelles (MM): A new nano-drug delivery system with anti-inflammatory potential?
2020, European Journal of Pharmaceutical SciencesCitation Excerpt :MM were first described by Moore in 1909 (Moore et al., 1909) and gained interest around 1960 as drug delivery systems to solubilize poorly water-soluble drugs. Detailed physicochemical investigations were carried out by the groups of Small and Carey, whereby ternary phase diagrams were produced for di- and trihydroxy bile salts, PLs and water leading to the postulation that MM exist as ‚mixed-disk‘ like structures (Carey and Small, 1970, 1969; Hofmann and Small, 1967; Mazer et al., 1980; Small et al., 1966a; Small et al., 1966b). Subsequent studies using X-ray scattering as well as NMR (Müller, 1984, 1981) revealed globular- as well as disk-like structures in dependence of the MM-composition, observations which were confirmed by Claffey et al. (Claffey and Holzbach, 1981) using UV-absorption and DSC-measurements.
