2020, Handbook of Behavioral NeuroscienceSimultaneous imaging of multiple neurotransmitters and neuroactive substances in the brain by desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry
2016, NeuroImageCitation Excerpt :Serotonin is mostly localized in the substantia nigra (Fig. 6B) in this sagittal level of the brain, which is consistent with previous reports concerning serotonin-containing neuronal pathways in the brain (John et al., 2006; Moukhles et al., 1997). While serotonin-containing neurons are mainly reported to be located near the midline or raphe regions, the existence of serotoninergic projections from dorsal raphe nuclei to the substantia nigra has also been demonstrated (Corvaja et al., 1993). Moreover, the presence of serotonin in the substantia nigra has been verified by several studies, illustrating the release and uptake of serotonin in both substantia nigra pars compacta and substantia nigra pars reticulata (John et al., 2006; Moukhles et al., 1997).
