Consequently, ticks in the field generally exhibit low infection rates (Allsopp, 2010) and infected animals are often asymptomatic, carrying the pathogen at very low levels (Andrew and Norval, 1989). Considering that E. ruminantium mainly resides in endothelial cells and can only be periodically found in the bloodstream, low prevalence rates based on PCR assays from blood samples are expected (Andrew and Norval, 1989; Lorusso et al., 2016).
