Earthquake distribution, neotectonic and GPS data provided the evidence that the Tindari Fault System is still active with right lateral and extensional displacements in the central and northern sectors, with earthquakes characterized by both extensional and strike-slip fault plane solutions (Neri et al., 1996; Serpelloni et al., 2010; Ghisetti, 1979; Lentini et al., 2000; Billi et al., 2006). According to Gliozzi and Malatesta (1984) and Bonfiglio et al. (2010) on the walls delimiting the Donnavilla Cave, the lithophaga holes are densely distributed, not abraded and confined between 73 m and 85 m of elevation a.s.l.

The regional tectonics that mostly affect this sector of the Tyrrhenean Sea is generated by the fault structures inside the sector 38°–39°N, 13.5°–16°E (Neri et al., 1996, Figs. 1 and 3). It is dominated by roughly NW–SE-aligned transcurrent faults, characterized by right-lateral movements (Filicudi, Sisifo, Tindari-Letojanni and Taormina faults).

2013, Quaternary InternationalCitation Excerpt :In the study area, tectonic activity is documented by instrumental crustal earthquakes (Chiarabba et al., 2005) and historical seismicity (Mongitore, 1743; Incudine, 1882; Working Group CPTI, 2004), with epicenters of the major earthquakes located along a NE-SW trending alignment extending south of Naso (Fig. 4). The main seismicity of the area is linked to the right-lateral NW–SE transcurrent systems (Vulcano–Lipari and Tindari–Giardini) responsible for the most recent earthquakes of this sector (Neri et al., 1996, 2003). In particular, in the Patti sector the historical seismicity recorded a maximum magnitude of 6.1 in 1978 (Fig. 4).
