Abstract

Elastic recoil detection analysis is applied for the first time to measurement of the relative abundance of submonolayer amounts of light adatoms on well-characterized surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. The technique is based on the use of energetic heavy ions under conditions such that the interaction with the adsorbate is described with simple classical formulae. As an example, the temperature dependent dehydrogenation of C2H4 on Ni(100) is discussed.
