Abstract

The asymptotic behaviour of the scattering amplitude is investigated at high energies. It is shown that at high energies the usual diffraction picture of scattering contradicts the unitarity conditions and analytic properties of the scattering amplitude formulated with the help of Mandelstam's representations. In terms of these conditions it is natural to expect that the cross section should decrease faster than 1/ln E.
