Abstract
We have investigated the suitability of various glasses for determination of the energy of fission fragments. For this purpose, we have correlated the diameter or the area of the fission fragment tracks of particles of well-known mass and kinetic energy with the energy and the particle velocity, respectively. The fission fragment track was made visible through etching, and for long etching times, a linear dependence between the surface area of the pits and the particle velocity was observed. A similar relationship has been found between the area of the etch pits and the etching time. Glasses with a high phosphate content have by far the most desirable properties and from these glasses we have constructed high resolation detectors. Our results indicate that a resolution of about 1–2 MeV is possible. Furthermore, our investigation show that, while borate glasses are also usable, the energy resolution is poorer, but silicate and fluoride glasses in general have little energy resolution. As an application of the detectors, various energy spectra from fission fragments are presented.
