2022, Continental Shelf ResearchCitation Excerpt :Fluid mud plays an important role in marine sediment dynamics as it has the potential to transport a significant amount of sediment. Fluid mud has been found in many coastal and estuarine regions, such as the Amazon River delta (Trowbridge and Kineke, 1994; Kineke and Sternberg, 1995), Jiaojiang Estuary (Guan et al., 2005), the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) of Hudson River (Traykovshi and Geyer, 2004), Weser Estuary (Becker et al., 2013), and the Chikugo River estuary (Azhikodan and Yokoyama, 2018). Fluid mud causes severe problems in estuaries because the rapid formation of fluid mud deposits significantly decreases channel depth, and seriously affects ship navigation (Wurpts, 2005).
